History and Problems
There were different variations of panel buildings built in the Soviet Union.
Series 1-464 was one of the most used projects.
Layouts of this series can be found in many cities that were under the influence of the USSR.
Several of these panel buildings are located in Vilnius.
This type of building is physically and functionally obsolete. The main objective of this reconstruction project is to eliminate the disadvantages of Soviet-era planning.
Accessibility
Buildings must be equipped with elevators and be fully accessible to people with limited mobility.
Easy navigation
Residents, guests, and delivery workers need to easily find the correct building and entrance.
Bigger kitchens
Kitchens in Soviet-era panel buildings are too small to meet modern living standards.
Additions for the first floor
To eliminate the price disparity between the first floor and the upper floors of the buildings.
Urban blocks
To address the disadvantages of previous planning, we propose changing the building placement strategy.
The distance between buildings allows us to add extensions and close the gaps, creating an urban block instead of a random building layout.
These extensions will separate public spaces (streets) from private residential areas.
The extensions will also create active street frontages for restaurants, shops, and offices..
